Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation in the context of REDD+

The 4th Regional Working Group Meeting of the REDD+ for the Guiana Shield was dedicated to « Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation in the context of REDD+ ». The meeting, organized by ONFI and hosted by IEF-AP, was held in Macapá, on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st August.

Continuing the format of previous WG meetings, the aim was to compare methodologies that are used within or outside the region and discuss specific technical topics in order to enhance a common understanding of REDD+ MRV through training and technology transfer.

The two days of work were divided into four sessions, each one developing a specific sub-topic and enriching the discussion through expert input on deforestation modelling and specific drivers of deforestation and policy measures. The following sub-topics were discussed by participants:

  • Drivers of deforestation in the Guiana Shield – Current situation, data availability and mapping initiatives;
  • Anticipating the evolution of drivers of deforestation and forest degradation to improve land-use planning and/or feed REL/RL;
  • Addressing drivers of deforestation and degradation – Policies and measures;
